The founder story

Partnership changed the nature of my job.

I spent my career within leading international law firms, including Shearman & Sterling, Freshfields, A&O Shearman and DLA Piper.

I advised private-equity sponsors, investment banks, direct lenders and major companies on hundreds of complex transactions across Europe, the United States and other international markets. I led teams, helped establish and grow practices, developed client relationships, won mandates and became responsible not simply for providing excellent legal advice, but for producing commercial results.

That transition changes the job. A partner is no longer simply a senior lawyer. Every partner operates a business within the larger business of the firm.

An owner's perspective

My understanding of that responsibility began before law.

In my early twenties, I owned and operated two consumer businesses and managed six employees.

I later studied applied economics, worked at the Bank of Canada and trained as a lawyer. Those experiences taught me to look at a practice not merely as a collection of legal matters, but as an operating business with a market, clients, revenue, costs, people, systems and strategic choices.

Run your practice like a business is not a metaphor borrowed from generic coaching theory. It is the connection between direct ownership and the commercial reality of partnership.

Why I built this

The work I valued most revealed the problem I wanted to solve.

Throughout my career, the work I found most rewarding was developing client relationships, finding new opportunities, advising people, navigating firms and helping lawyers solve difficult commercial, client and team problems.

I also saw the same gap repeatedly. Law firms devote years to developing excellent lawyers, then expect new partners to understand business generation, client development, leadership, internal influence and practice management—often without giving them structured preparation for those responsibilities.

Full Potential for Lawyers is my response to that gap. It allows me to use what I learned as a business owner, international lawyer, practice builder and partner to help other lawyers build stronger practices, lead better teams and operate with greater commercial clarity.

The next step

Your firm provides the platform. What you build on it is your responsibility.

Develop a more deliberate approach to clients, revenue, leadership and the commercial direction of your practice.
